Do these energy rules apply in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland?
Great Britain · Rules checked 24 October 2026 · Not legal advice
England, Scotland and Wales
Ofgem regulates gas and electricity suppliers across Great Britain, so the licence conditions (including the 12-month back-billing rule), the Guaranteed Standards and the Energy Ombudsman apply in all three nations.
- England and Wales: Citizens Advice consumer service, 0808 223 1133.
- Scotland: energyadvice.scot, 0808 196 8660.
Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland has its own regulator (the Utility Regulator) and its own consumer body (the Consumer Council for Northern Ireland). The rules on this site and in the kit don't apply there. Contact the Consumer Council for help.
Heat networks
If your heat comes from a communal or district heat network, different rules apply. The Energy Ombudsman can handle some heat network complaints.
