Final energy bill and credit refund after switching or moving
Great Britain · Rules checked 24 October 2026 · Not legal advice
The deadlines
- Final bill within 6 weeks of the supplier no longer supplying you (regulation 6CA of the Standards of Performance Regulations 2015). The licence also requires reasonable steps to send a final bill within 6 weeks (SLC 27.17), and a corrected bill as soon as reasonably practicable if errors come to light (27.18).
- Credit refunded within 10 working days of the final bill, or corrected final bill (regulation 6D).
Miss either and the supplier owes you £40, plus another £40 if that's paid late.
Tips
- Give your old supplier a closing reading with a photo on the switch or move date.
- Check the final bill uses that reading.
- If the supplier has gone bust, Citizens Advice explains how credit is handled by the new supplier.
If the final bill is wrong, use the steps in how to dispute a bill.
